4711 is a traditional German Eau de Cologne by Mäurer & Wirtz. Because it has been produced in Cologne since at least 1799, it is allowed to use the geographical indication Original Eau de Cologne. The brand has been expanded to various other perfumes and products besides the original Echt Kölnisch Wasser, which has used the same formula for more than 200 years.
Maurer & Wirtz was originally founded as a soap production company in 1854 by father and stepson duo, Michael Maurer and Andreas Wirtz, eventually adding fragrances to their wares by the 20th Century. The company is based in Stolberg, Germany, a small town near Aachen. For much of their 150 years of tradition, Maurer & Wirtz remained a European-focused company and although they have since branched out internationally, they have continued to keep the business in the family for five generations.
4711 Nouveau Cologne by Maurer & Wirtz, Since 2011, 4711 Nouveau cologne has been tantalizing wearers with its dramatic scent. Filled with woody, floral, and fruity accords, this fragrance uses top notes of litchi, yuzu, and black currant to give it a slight gourmand overtone with a hint of zest. The heart of the fragrance creates the floral by blending heliotrope, peony, and geranium to give the scent a foundational sweetness. The floral is undercut with a base comprised of musk, sandalwood, and tonka bean. The overall effect is a woody fragrance with hints of sweetness and fruitiness.
